Summary

Arena Sawmill is one of the newest Arena maps, that came with the Sniper/Spy update. It features a rainy environment (first rain in a TF2 map), with also the first waterfall to be seen in TF2, and also a "trap" in the middle, featuring 2 saw blades moving up and down.

This is also the first map, where you are safe when you spawn. You cannot be killed when you stay in the spawn, which is annoying if someone is Away From Keyboard (AFK).

The map is NOT symetrical. Although the features are symetrical. Like a pool of water on one side, and on the other side, but with a different layout, or the rooftop run, but with a different layout on the other side. The size is actually quite big. This ain't a small map.

There are 2 health vials, and some ammo around.

There are lot's of ways to move, dodge, and tactical shifts to ultimately kill your opponent.

There are many entrances, from the spawn off:

  • Rooftop entrance: Leads if followed, directly to the CP. Is the most common used road, but later on, they usually jump off, and continue on the ground.
  • Lower entrance/Ground:You can walk down the stairs, to continue on the ground. This one is the most uncommon road, since the Rooftop entrance is straight ahead. But the ground entrances meets up 4 entrances to the whole map, like going to the pool of water, going left to the CP, right to the CP, or going to the other side, at the opponents pool.

What makes this map unique?

  • First time moving death traps, the saws in the middle of the map (around the CP)
  • First time rain effects.
  • Also a more darker map then the others.
  • Has 2 main routes, rooftop and ground level.

Strategies

  • When you take the rooftop entrance, you can jump directly towards the enemy, ignoring the barricade (fence), and mostly taking them by surprise. Every class can do this. (Heavy maybe not, since he is slow, and possibly can't jump very high)
  • As an Engineer, if you follow the rooftop entrance, all the way to the CP, stop at the windows, and build a sentry there. You can overlook the CP, and the enemy has a harder time attacking you from the back. (still possible though) Building a dispenser there also provides health and ammo at a protected spot.
  • The log in the upper middle of the CP can be used to your advantage. If you are a skilled scout, you can jump on that log, avoiding contact from below, and you can jump to the other sides as well. Usually, players don't look up to spot you, mostly catching them by surprise.

Other things

  • When the match is over, people usually throw them selves on the sawmills. It's funny, and there is a Basket on both sides. Try to throw yourself in there!
  • Thunder occurs every 11-12 seconds.
